WHY

Mountain Rescue England & Wales (MREW) is a national charity with 3,000+ unpaid volunteers, across 47 full member teams.

Each MREW team is a separate entity rooted in a unique place, with a history and character of its own.

The challenge was to unite the 47 MREW teams in creating shared values with meaning for everyone.

The values needed to embody one core MREW team spirit and purpose.

MREW wanted to dig into a deep analysis of their culture to strengthen their national identity, amplify their collective voice and provide clarity for all members and partners.

HOW

ICE created data-led insight into the current, lived MREW experience by deploying the proprietary ‘Culture Map’ diagnostic tool.

Development workshops then built on the insight through co-creation of visual metaphor and shared narrative.

This brought an immersive, human meaning to the data we could see.

ICE unpacked the collective definition of what ‘being a mountain rescuer’ really means, backed by their own data.

To finish, an organisation-wide session brought the narratives and data together in a culmination of meaning and perspective, with facilitated discussion to define and agree the language of MREW values and their associated behaviours.

WHAT

47 MREW teams are now united in one ethos that has been distilled into four values, with clear explanations to accelerate engagement and drive behavioural alignment.

ICE also helped MREW regional chairs facilitate conversations with their people by creating a clear briefing document.

Teamwork, excellence, caring & passionate graphic

MREW now have a better shared understanding of their own culture, because the whole process was data-led, engaging and democratic.

This work has enhanced their communication about organisational strategy and operational needs.

MREW are now focused to further define relationships, touchpoints and are enabled to fuel even greater future success toward their mission.

"You have got a massive amount of patience. I’ve never seen patience like this before.

You’ve definitely got us to where we needed to get to, and that’s where not just that patience, but a passion and creativity is so evident. You’ve been so patient to get us to this place where we are all agreeing, aligned and got us through our frustrations and challenges.

What really helped us to get to this place is that you stood by us and that you have been involved right through. That is important. Having the consistency of team is important.

You’re professionally worked out how to take arrows and switch lanes. Fantastic, brilliant.

Obviously, we needed that external look in from ICE. It needed the right questions and great listening; alongside challenging us, to stand back and check is this right?

I really admire your tenacity and the fact that you stuck with us as an organisation you could easily have walked away professionally from it. And yet no problems, you were persistent in pursuing it through. Thank you.

We know what we’re doing next. We’ve got that clarity. We’ve got the tools we’ve got what we need. "
